When was the EPF interest rate of 8.25% was announced?

EPFO announced in the first week of March that it would retain an 8.25% interest rate for EPF for the Financial Year 2025-26.

When can EPF interest be credited?

The press release also mentioned that the interest rate would be officially notified by the government of India, following which, EPFO would credit the rate of interest into the subscribers’ account.

So, EPFO did not announce any specific date for EPF interest to be credited.

Why is EPF interest not credited to EPF subscribers’ accounts before the start of a financial year?

Adhil Shetty, CEO, BankBazaar.com, told ET Wealth Online that if your EPF interest has not yet been credited, there is usually no reason to worry.

Shetty says EPFO does not credit interest immediately after the financial year ends as the process involves government approval, reconciliation of accounts, and updating millions of member records, which can take several weeks.

Shetty said, "For FY 2025–26, EPF deposits earn 8.25% interest. The interest accrues on eligible balances even if the entry is not yet visible in your passbook. Members should periodically check for the update marked "Int. Updated up to 31/03/2026" in their EPF passbook. In most cases, a delay in reflection is administrative and does not affect the interest amount due to the member."

When was the EPF interest credited to subscribers’ account in the year 2025?

In 2025, a large number of EPF members got interest credited to their respective accounts in June and July.

Experts say that the process has gathered speed as earlier, the interest used to be credited in September and October. However, this time, it may be credited in June and July.

However, the real date of the EPF interest credit will be known after the government’s notification.

Will you lose the interest amount if the EPF interest credit is delayed?

According to paragraph 60 of the EPF Scheme of 1952, interest is computed on the monthly running balance even if it is credited at the end of the fiscal year. As a result, the member does not suffer in the event of any delay in crediting interest to his account.

The EPFO calculates interest based on the monthly running balance, ensuring every contribution earns the full declared rate. Interest is compounded annually, so even if crediting happens late, the full amount is added to your closing balance for the year.

The EPFO on multiple occasions has responded to several such queries saying that there would be no interest loss and that interest would be accrued and paid in full.
