Gurgaon: The traffic police have taken a firm stance against lane-changing violations, issuing over 55,500 challans this year so far. Five FIRs were registered last week under Section 285 of the BNS. "These are among the first few cases registered in the district solely for lane-discipline violations, indicating our zero-tolerance policy towards risky road behaviour. These FIRs are registered every year near winters or the foggy season to avoid road crashes," ASI Vikas Verma, traffic police spokesperson, said.

According to officials, the first-time offender is fined Rs 500, the second-time offender is issued a challan of Rs 1,500, and the third-time or repeated offender may face a fine up to Rs 5,000 and FIRs. The enforcement was carried out with the help of drone surveillance and HD cameras installed by NHAI across NH8, Sohna Road and Dwarka Expressway.

The data collected between Jan 1 and Sept 30, 2025, shows a total of 53,145 challans issued to drivers for lane indiscipline. An additional 2,433 challans were issued from Oct 1 to Oct 12, resulting in a total fine amount of Rs 18,25,500 collected during this 12-day period alone. Last year, the traffic police fined a total of 61,780 violators for lane-changing violations.

"We are conducting regular awareness drives, targeting truckers, company drivers, school bus drivers, and autorickshaw operators. Special workshops are being held to explain the importance of lane discipline and to reduce accidents caused by sudden or improper lane changes. Our aim is not just enforcement but behavioural change. Road discipline can save lives," DCP traffic Rajesh Mohan said.
