Asda makes major change to shelves in 142 stores in huge boost for shoppers
A supermarket has announced a major change to make customers' shopping experiences 'safer' across 142 stores. Asda says allergy and ingredient information is being displayed on electronic shelf-edge labels from this week.
It's been rolled out across 142 Asda Express stores as they're the ones that contain its 'loose bakery' range.
Natasha Ednan-Laperouse died aged 15 after eating a Pret a Manger baguette containing sesame seeds that she was allergic to in 2016. The ingredient was not listed on the product and it's believed that if it had been then she'd still be alive.
Natasha's Law, which came into effect in October 2021, requires all foods made and packaged at a store, such as salads, cakes and sandwiches, to display a full ingredients list.
The top 14 allergens must also be highlighted in a move the Natasha's Foundation hailed as 'closing a dangerous loophole in food safety'.
The change has been made to the loose bakery section as they don't have packages to contain this information. The news broke when Asda's retail operations manager, Tom Clark, posted about the label updates on LinkedIn.
He said: "I have a proud moment to share. Today marks the successful launch of Natasha's Law allergen and calorie information for bakery products on Vusion electronic shelf-edge labels across over 140 Asda Express stores.
