July 4, 2026: A Child Goes Missing


On Saturday afternoon, the 12-year-old girl left her home in Surjyapur, Baruipur, to buy a birthday gift for a friend. When she failed to return, her family launched a frantic search before filing a missing person complaint with the local police later that night.


July 5, 2026: Body Found, Public Anger Explodes


The following day, the girl's body was recovered from a pond, stuffed inside a sack. Preliminary post-mortem findings indicated that she had been sexually assaulted before being thrown into the water while she was still alive.


The gruesome discovery sparked outrage across Baruipur. Angry residents blocked roads and railway tracks, vandalised police vehicles, and clashed with law enforcement, accusing the police of failing to act promptly after the girl was reported missing.


Amid the chaos, a local man, Indranath Tanti, was lynched by an enraged mob on suspicion of involvement in the crime. Police later arrested around 20 people in connection with the mob violence.


July 6, 2026: Police Make First Arrests


Police registered a fresh FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Three accused, Prabhas Mondal, Anand Sardar, and Dibakar Sardar, were arrested. Investigators later arrested a fourth accused, Kabir Mollah, as the probe widened.


The National Commission for Women (NCW) also took suo motu cognisance of the incident and sought an Action Taken Report from the West Bengal Director General of Police.


July 7, 2026: Political Spotlight on the Case

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari visited the victim's family and assured them that the guilty would receive exemplary punishment. He also demanded accountability for any alleged lapses in the police response and gave the authorities a 72-hour ultimatum to complete key parts of the investigation.
