BIS seize Rs 7.3 crore worth gold jewels from Trichy shops
TRICHY: Sleuths from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Coimbatore branch office conducted an enforcement search and seizure drive at a commercial street in Trichy city, confiscating 4.9 kg of gold jewels valued totally at Rs 7.3 crores. The gold jewels were seized by the BIS team for not having the mandatory Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID), a violation of the BIS Act, 2016.
Based on a tip off from the public, two teams headed by Vinith Kumar (scientist/director) and Rino John (scientist/director) from Coimbatore, conducted the enforcement drive on Big Bazaar street near Rockfort in Trichy city on Monday evening. The commercial street is home to several home-grown gold jewelers.
During the search at two jewellery shops identified as Vasavi Jewellers and Selvithanga Maligai, BIS teams found that the shops exhibited around 4.9 kg of gold jewels for sale but without HUID, a six-digit alphanumeric number without which gold jewels should not be sold.
