The Government's spending plans for defence will leave the Royal Navy vulnerable at the precise time NATO warns Russia could attack Europe. The plans, which will see warships phased out in favour of uncrewed systems, could spell the end of the Royal Navy as we know it and risks the deaths of sailors, critics have warned.

Mike Martin MP, who is a member of both the Defence Select Committee and the Joint Committee on National Security Strategy, warned that the transition from warships to autonomous vessels leaves the UK vulnerable at a time when NATO warns the Russian threat will be at its height. The Defence Investment Plan (DIP), released a fortnight ago, set out plans to scrap a programme to procure Type 83 Destroyers to replace the Royal Navy's ageing destroyers in favour of procuring at least six so-called "common combat vessels" (CCVs), which will act as command hubs for uncrewed systems.
