Cancerous kidney tumour removed from 2-yr-old
Trichy : Doctors at the paediatric surgery department in Mahatma Gandhi memorial govt hospital (MGMGH) have performed a complex cancer surgery on a two-year-old girl diagnosed with Wilms tumour , a common kidney cancer affecting children.
The child, a native of Manapparai , was admitted with a swelling in her abdomen on July 10. Detailed clinical evaluation and imaging confirmed a right-sided Wilms tumour, a malignant growth arising from the kidney. The child underwent a radical right nephrectomy with extensive lymph node dissection on July 13 to achieve complete tumour clearance and enable accurate cancer staging.

Hospital authorities said the child recovered well after surgery and is being prepared to undergo adjuvant chemotherapy as part of standard treatment protocol. The surgery was performed by Dr Nirankumar Samuel , assistant professor, department of paediatric surgery, while the anesthesia team was led by Prof Dr Chandran , assisted by Dr Karthikeyan.
Doctors said Wilms tumour affects several hundred children in India every year, but early diagnosis and coordinated treatment have significantly improved survival rates to 90% in appropriately treated cases.
