Chhattisgarh bride who rejected 'drunk' groom marries him 16 days later in dramatic twist

RAIPUR: Sometimes the biggest twist comes after the story appears to have ended.

Sixteen days after refusing to marry Sant Kumar over allegations that he had turned up drunk at their wedding, Muskaan Pradhan has rewritten her own story — by marrying the same man in a quiet temple ceremony, saying conversations after the aborted wedding helped clear the misunderstandings that had driven them apart.

The wedding, solemnised at Manka Dai temple in Janjgir-Champa on Thursday, has left many in Chhattisgarh surprised. Only a fortnight ago, Muskaan had become an overnight symbol of courage after sending back Sant Kumar's baraat from her village in Kosmanda, declaring, "If he cannot handle himself on his wedding day, how will he take care of me?"

The remark struck a chord across the state. Police officers, administrators and social organisations publicly praised her decision, and she was inducted as a counsellor at the family counselling centre to strengthen awareness campaigns against substance abuse.

On Thursday, however, the story took an unexpected turn.

After attending her regular duty at the counselling centre, Muskaan left around 2 pm but did not return home. As her phone remained switched off, anxious relatives alerted the police. A search by police and a cyber team traced her to Khokhra village, where officers found that she had already married Sant Kumar at the temple in the presence of his family.

According to the couple, they remained in touch after their June 23 wedding was called off and gradually resolved their differences.

Sant Kumar maintained that he does not consume alcohol and claimed someone had mixed an intoxicating substance into his soft drink on the day of the wedding, making him appear intoxicated. He said he apologised to Muskaan after the incident and promised never to consume alcohol, following which the two decided to give their relationship another chance.
