Civic body additional commissioner reviews ABC Centre in Patiala, says dog shelter to come up near Ghalori by Oct
Patiala: Additional commissioner of Patiala municipal corporation Simarpreet Kaur on Thursday said construction of a dedicated dog shelter, coming up on a 1.61-acre site near Ghalori, is expected to begin soon and be completed by Oct.
She made the announcement during an inspection of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centre in Patiala.
During the inspection, Kaur reviewed the centre's functioning, including kennel maintenance, cleanliness, infrastructure, operational arrangements and overall management. Accompanied by officials of the health branch and the ABC Centre, she also examined records, registers and other documents to ensure the Animal Birth Control programme was being implemented as per prescribed guidelines.

She said the dog shelter project is being taken up in compliance with Supreme Court directions and the Animal Birth Control Rules and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which mandate the establishment of dog shelters in every district. The tender has already been opened, and the facility will provide humane care, management and rehabilitation for stray dogs.
She said the municipal corporation had launched an Emergency Dog Bite Complaint Helpline (+91 62846 68219), through which citizens could report dog bite incidents and other related complaints to the civic body.
Highlighting that the corporation was committed to achieving 100% sterilization of stray dogs through a ward-wise and hotspot-based strategy, she directed health officer Dr Navinder Singh, surgeon Dr Ankit Narang, and officials of the health branch and ABC Centre to prepare and implement a focused action plan to ensure complete coverage of all identified hotspot areas as per the prescribed targets.
