Civil society groups in Mumbai slam 'police brutality' on CJP demonstrators
Mumbai: Civil society activists, legal experts, media professionals and members of youth organisations have demanded “immediate systemic accountability from govt, law enforcement, media and judiciary’’ in the wake of the NEET paper leak and the ensuing public protests.
At a press conference organised by United Against Injustice and Discrimination and Bombay Catholic Sabha on Tuesday, they condemned the “police brutality” at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and expressed concern over alleged targeting of people involved in the protests, crackdown on social media accounts and posts by Delhi police , and the “threat of cancellation of passports’’.
Participants demanded that state govts withdraw all criminal cases, FIRs and legal proceedings initiated against students and youth activists.
Speakers denounced the violence unleashed on demonstrators at Jantar Mantar and elsewhere. “Peaceful and creatively-organised assemblies by youth demanding transparency and justice were met with unwarranted lathicharges, physical assault, arbitrary detentions and institutional intimidation, in violation of constitutional rights and democracy. Several FIRs have been filed against students for merely exercising their right to protest. Criminalising young citizens who are merely raising their voices to protect their academic future is an alarming misuse of power, and all detained individuals must be released without any victimisation,’’ they said.
