Contractor on morning walk shot dead in Vaishali
Patna : A 49-year-old private contractor was shot dead by four motorcycle-borne assailants during a morning walk in Vaishali district on Thursday. Police suspect that the murder may be linked to a land dispute . One named accused was arrested, while raids were underway to nab the others.
The victim, Ramnaresh Rai , a resident of Dighi Khurd village under Vaishali Sadar police station area, was attacked near a pond around 200 metres from his house at about 5.15am. The entire incident, captured on CCTV, lasted less than a minute.
According to police, Rai was heading out for his routine morning walk when two motorcycle-borne criminals intercepted him. As he tried to flee along an unpaved path, two attackers chased him and opened fire at close range. He sustained four bullet injuries and died on the spot.
Hearing the gunshots, residents rushed to the spot, but Rai had already succumbed to his injuries. The assailants fled immediately after the shooting.
Rai worked as a contractor for a construction company and lived with his parents in Dighi village . His wife stays in Patna with their son for the latter’s education.
Police are probing a possible land dispute angle behind the killing. According to sources, Rai had leased out a shop and the access road to the property passed through land owned by Mukesh Rai . Investigators are examining allegations that Mukesh had earlier threatened the contractor and demanded extortion money for use of the road.
Vaishali SP Shubhank Mishra said four men on two motorcycles opened fire on Rai during his morning walk before fleeing. “He died on the spot after receiving four bullet injuries,” the SP said.
An FSL team visited the crime spot and collected evidence, while police are analysing CCTV footage to identify the attackers.
Sadar SHO Mukesh Kumar said, “An FIR has been registered against three named and four unidentified persons on the complaint of the victim’s wife. One of the named accused has been arrested, while raids are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.”
