'Deteriorating health': Kerala HC grants interim bail to convict sentenced to death in Renjith Sreenivasan murder case

Kochi: High court has granted interim bail to Navas of Alappuzha , a convict sentenced to capital punishment by the trial court in the 2021 Renjith Sreenivasan murder case, for one month in view of his deteriorating health condition.

The bench of Justices V Raja Vijayaraghavan and K V Jayakumar issued the order on an application filed by Navas, who is currently lodged in the Central Prison, Poojappura, seeking interim bail to undergo medical treatment pending his appeal challenging his conviction and sentence. Upon perusing the medical report submitted by the prison’s medical officer, HC noted that the petitioner had been diagnosed with quadriparesis with cognitive impairment, a complicated neurological condition. The court further noted that he is completely bedridden and relies on the voluntary assistance of other inmates for his daily activities.

Accordingly, HC granted him interim bail by suspending his sentence for a period of 30 days on his executing a bond of Rs 1 lakh with two solvent sureties for the like amount each. Upon the expiry of the 30 days, the petitioner shall surrender before the jail superintendent on Aug 5.

Navas and 14 others were sentenced to death by the Mavelikkara additional sessions court on Jan 30, 2024, for the murder of Renjith Sreenivasan, the state secretary of the BJP OBC Morcha. Sreenivasan was brutally murdered in front of his wife, mother and child at his home in Vellakinar, Alappuzha, on Dec 19, 2021, by a gang allegedly affiliated with the Popular Front of India (PFI) and Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), in retaliation for the killing of SDPI state secretary K S Shan .
