Disproportionate assets case: Former Salem corporation commissioner sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment
SALEM: A special court in Chennai has sentenced V Pitchai , former commissioner of Salem Municipal Corporation , to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 in a disproportionate assets case.
The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Chennai division, registered a case against Pitchai on charges of amassing assets beyond his known sources of income during the period from Jan 1, 1997 to Dec 31, 2001.

Investigations revealed that he acquired assets and monetary gains worth Rs 34,22,653, amounting to 152.45% beyond his legitimate income. A chargesheet was filed after examining 23 witnesses.
The court on Tuesday pronounced him guilty and sentenced him.
