PTC Web Desk:  An elderly couple, both above 70 years of age, was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside their locked home in Ludhiana’s Shimlapuri area on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Kuldeep Singh and his wife Harmit Kaur, residents of Janta Nagar. According to family members, both bodies were discovered lying near the bed with visible head injuries and blood stains, raising suspicion of foul play.

Relatives said the couple’s daughter, who lives abroad, became worried after repeated phone calls to her parents went unanswered. Around 10:40 am, she contacted relatives in Ludhiana and asked them to check on the couple.

One of the relatives said they reached the house along with another family member and found the main gate locked from inside. The room door was also shut, while the couple’s scooter and car were parked outside, indicating they were at home.

“We noticed a foul smell coming from inside the room. The door had only a light latch from inside. As soon as we pushed it, it opened,” the relative said.

The police said the couple had been living in the locality for nearly 55 years. Residents of the area told investigators that both were seen moving around normally until two days ago. However, when neither of them came out of the house on Friday or Saturday, neighbours assumed they were staying indoors.

The matter came to light after a strong smell started spreading from the house during the afternoon.

Family members revealed that the couple’s five daughters live in different cities and countries, including Canada, the United States, England and Ghaziabad. Their only son had passed away in 2006. Kuldeep Singh earlier owned a fan manufacturing factory, which is now closed.

After receiving information, senior police officials and forensic experts reached the spot.

The bodies were shifted to the Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.

ACP Anubhav Jain said  the police received information through the control room regarding the absence of movement at the house for the last two days. He confirmed that both elderly residents were found dead upon arrival.

He added that investigators are examining the case from all possible angles, including murder. CCTV cameras installed in and around the locality are being checked, while the crime investigation team has also been deployed to gather evidence.

The police said the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report is received.
