Family's heartbreaking plea after policewoman, 22, dies in Corfu seaside village
The devastated family of a young British police officer who died on a holiday in Corfu have made an emotional plea for answers three years after her tragic death. Hannah Byrne, a 22-year-old Surrey Police officer from Horley, tragically lost her life on the first night of her trip to the Greek party hotspot of Kavos on September 1, 2023.
The young officer suffered a fatal head injury after falling from a rooftop. Nearly three years on, her grieving family are still desperately searching for the truth. Now, her heartbroken family are begging anyone with information to finally step forward after her case was dramatically raised in Parliament. Speaking out, Ms Byrne's mother, Sarah Warner, made an emotional plea to anyone who was in the Greek resort at the time.
"Even the smallest detail could make a huge difference," Ms Warner added. "We just want to know what happened so we can grieve at last."
Ms Byrne's brother, Ollie, who attended the House of Commons to hear his sister's case being debated, described the experience as "bittersweet". He said: "Things should never have got to this stage, but hopefully this is a step in the right direction in terms of getting closure [...] That way, at least we as a family can grieve."
The push for answers comes as the family's local MP, Chris Coghlan, urged the Government on Monday (July 13) to do everything in its power to accelerate the slow investigation abroad. Addressing Parliament, the Dorking and Horley MP revealed that two British women who may have been present at the time of Hannah's fatal fall fled the scene without speaking to local police. He demanded to know why the UK Government has seemingly dragged its feet, also revealing that Greek authorities had requested permission in 2024 for UK police to interview these two potential witnesses.
"Her family still don't know if the Home Office ever responded to the Greek authorities' 2024 request to allow UK police to interview these women," he told MPs.
