DHARAMPURI : A farmer has been fined Rs 1.25 lakh for installing an illegal electric fence to poach wild animals near the Sulur forest area in Dharmapuri district.

Acting on a tip-off that an electric fence had been illegally installed in the rocky terrain adjoining the Sulur forest, a team led by Palacode forest range officer Karthikeyan conducted a patrol in the area. They found that electricity had been drawn illegally from an electric pole using hooks and connected to a fence set up in a revenue department-owned rocky area bordering the forest.

An inquiry revealed that the fence had been installed by Eswaran of Soodanur village. Officials said the fence was intended to trap and poach wild animals moving in the area. Eswaran was taken to the Palacode forest range office for questioning.

Based on the directions of district forest officer Rajangam, a fine of Rs 1.25 lakh was imposed on him. The officer warned that strict action would be taken against anyone installing electric fences in areas frequented by elephants and other wild animals.
