Jaishankar's Sharp Response on Russian Oil Row: “Europe Must Not Forget Its Own Actions”

Newspoint

Amid ongoing criticism from the United States and several European nations over India’s purchase of crude oil from Russia, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a strong and pointed response, highlighting what he described as inconsistencies in Europe’s own foreign policy and trade decisions.

India Defends Its Energy Choices

, Jaishankar defended India’s continued import of Russian oil, stating that the decision was driven by market conditions, pricing, and global availability rather than political alignment.

He explained that after the Ukraine conflict and Western sanctions, a large portion of global oil supply shifted, making Russian crude one of the most accessible and economically viable options for India.

“Weapons Sold to Countries That Target India”

In a sharp rebuttal, Jaishankar also pointed to Europe’s long-standing defense trade practices, arguing that several European countries have exported weapons systems to regions where such arms have been used against India.

He emphasized that while India has not contributed to any military threat against Europe, its own security concerns have often been overlooked in global discussions.

Criticism of Double Standards

Jaishankar further stated that global energy and defense policies often shift based on convenience rather than consistent principles. He noted that India has consistently acted in line with its national interests, particularly in ensuring energy security for its population.

He also recalled that during the global energy crisis, the United States had encouraged India to continue purchasing Russian oil to stabilize international markets, highlighting what he described as changing positions among Western nations.

“We Understand How the System Works”

Responding to broader geopolitical criticism, Jaishankar said that international policy decisions often change depending on circumstances, stressing that nations act based on strategic interests rather than fixed moral frameworks.

His remarks were widely interpreted as a firm assertion of India’s independent foreign policy stance.

A Wider Diplomatic Debate

The comments come at a time when global tensions over energy trade, sanctions, and security partnerships continue to shape international relations. India, meanwhile, has maintained that its energy and defense decisions are guided primarily by national interest and economic stability

rather than external pressure.
