Jamun fruit takes centre stage in markets; high demand driven by medicinal benefits

Newspoint

Kundapur: Amid the aroma of mangoes, often referred to as the king of fruits, the seasonal and health-rich jamun fruit has arrived in the market, attracting customers during the summer months from May to July.

Vendors are selling jamun fruit at various fruit shops along the city's main roads, including around Shastri Circle and roadside stalls.

Prices lower this year

Two varieties of jamun are currently available in the market — native jamun and jumbo jamun. Compared to last year, prices have declined this season.

The native variety is smaller in size and is being sold at Rs 240 per kg. Although sales began on a limited scale during the first week of May, customer response was lower than expected because the fruit contained less pulp. As a result, market supply also declined. However, traders say the native variety is superior in taste and medicinal value.

The jumbo variety, on the other hand, is larger and more visually appealing. It is currently being sold at Rs 70 to Rs 80 per quarter kilogram and up to Rs 280 per kg. Last year, the same variety was sold for as much as Rs 350 per kg.
