In a shocking incident, masked robbers stormed a State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district, escaping with 58 kg of gold and nearly ₹8 crore in cash.
Armed Robbers in Military Uniform
The robbery occurred on Tuesday evening, leaving the local community stunned. According to News18, the gang entered the bank armed with country-made pistols and other weapons. Reports suggest the men were disguised in military uniforms to avoid suspicion.
Once inside, the robbers quickly overpowered staff members, including the manager and cashier. The employees were tied up to prevent them from raising an alarm, allowing the assailants to carry out the heist without resistance.
Swift Getaway and Police Search
After looting the gold and cash, the robbers fled in a getaway vehicle. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, prompting a joint search operation by police forces from Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Officials have cordoned off the branch and launched a full investigation. Large crowds gathered outside the bank as news of the massive heist spread across the city.
Echo of a Previous Heist in Vijayapura
This robbery has striking similarities to a major bank heist in June 2025 at a Canara Bank branch in the same district. In that case, criminals looted 59 kg of pledged gold and ₹5.2 lakh in cash.
The investigation into the earlier case revealed insider involvement. Police arrested three individuals, including former bank manager Vijaykumar Miriyal, alleged to be the mastermind, former employee-turned-contractor Chandrashekhar Nerella, and the manager’s assistant Sunil Moka.
Security Concerns Raised
The involvement of bank staff in the June 2025 robbery has raised renewed concerns about insider threats and weak security protocols in local financial institutions. Authorities have launched a manhunt to track down those behind this latest high-profile crime, with investigations still underway.
