Kochi corp to stop subsidy for collecting diaper, napkin waste
Kochi: Corporation will soon stop giving subsidies to the public while paying the charges for collecting sanitary waste such as napkins and diapers. Corporation will be deploying an agency to directly procure such waste for Rs 20/kg.
Earlier, the charge was Rs 12 while the actual cost was Rs 45. Corporation was giving a subsidy of Rs 33/kg to meet the gap.
“Raidco, a PSU, has approached us with a proposal that they will collect diaper and napkin waste directly from households for a fee of Rs 20/kg. Raidco was already given the responsibility to operate an incinerator we constructed at Brahmapuram. Earlier, two private firms were collecting the waste and treating it at Keil’s plant at Ambalamugal. The corporation had to pay Rs 45/kg to Keil,” said Seena Gokulan, chairperson, health standing committee, corporation.
