Man dies, three of his family members suffer injuries in road accident near Salem

SALEM: A man died and three members of his family suffered serious injuries after a car they were travelling in collided with a pickup van near Narappansavadi bus stop in Salem district on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as M Ravi, 56, of Varnapuram in Erode district.

The accident happened on the Sankari–Namakkal National Highway when Ravi was travelling with his wife Muthulakshmi,49, son Sabari, 27, and daughter-in-law Arulmozhi, 26, to Thirumanancheri temple in Mayiladuthurai district. “Ravi was driving the car. He sustained fatal injuries after the car collided with a pickup van. He died on the way to Sankagiri Government Hospital,” said a police officer.

The injured were shifted to Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital.

Locals alleged that ongoing GAIL gas pipeline work along the highway narrowed the road and made it a single lane. “This had already caused to two fatal accidents. This is the third accident,” said M Sundar Kumar, a resident. The local villagers demanded that GAIL and highway authorities expedite the pipeline work and restore two-way traffic to prevent further mishaps.
