The Met Office has extended its amber extreme heat warning into Sunday morning (June 28). It is in place until 9am, covering parts of the East Midlands, East of England, and London and South East England.

It comes after Britain has basked in scorching temperatures over recent days. According to the Met Office, the UK provisionally broke its maximum temperature record for a third consecutive day on Friday (June 26), with the mercury hitting 37.3C at Santon Downham in Suffolk. Elsewhere, temperatures topped the previous record of 35.6C which was hit in 1957 and 1976.

The forecaster now expects the warm weather to continue overnight and into Sunday morning. They said eastern areas of the UK will retain the warmth for the longest with temperatures set to remain above 20C overnight.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Dan Harris said: "While many in the UK will already be noticing a drop in temperatures, those in eastern England especially are in for another uncomfortably warm and humid night on Saturday, prolonging the potential for health-related impacts.

"By Sunday, fresher air from the Atlantic will be almost country wide; the far east of East Anglia hanging on to very warm but less humid weather followed by a much fresher nighttime for all. Temperatures will return much nearer to average for all by the start of next week."

During the amber warning, the Met Office has warned of "adverse heath effects" to those "vulnerable to extreme heat". Meanwhile, the forecaster says the wider population face the risk of sunburn, heat exhaustion an other heat-related illnesses.

People are advised to keep out of the sun and avoid any exercise between 11am and 3pm. They should also take on plenty of water, stay in the shade, wear suncream and hat.

The Met Office is also warning of potential travel delays and advises those using public transport to leave plenty of time for their journeys. The forecaster advises people to carry water and a hand-held battery fan if they're using buses or trains.

The Met Office said: "Very hot and humid weather will continue to affect eastern and southeastern England but likely a few degrees cooler than the previous few days. Temperatures will still widely exceed 30 Celsius, peaking around 32 - 33 Celsius in London or East Anglia.

"Temperatures overnight Saturday into Sunday remain unlikely to fall below high teens Celsius for most, with a few places not dropping below 20 Celsius. This will again be accompanied by high humidity at first, but fresher conditions will steadily become established from the west during the latter part of the night. Another hot day is expected in the far east of the region on Sunday, but both temperatures and humidity lower than recent days with a much lower likelihood of further impacts."
