Objectionable remark row: No intention to remand Udhayanidhi Stalin, TN govt tells Madras high court
CHENNAI: Hours after the detention of opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin over his objectionable remarks allegedly targeting chief minister C. Joseph Vijay, the Tamil Nadu government informed the Madras high court that he would be released on station bail after questioning.
Advocate General Vijay Narayan made the submission while responding to an anticipatory bail plea filed by Udhayanidhi. Recording the submission, Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan instructed the state to ensure that his detention was not prolonged and that he was released before the end of the day.
Udhayanidhi was also directed to cooperate with the investigation whenever required.
On Monday, the DMK organised a rally in Thanjavur to protest against the Cauvery water dispute . While addressing the gathering, Udhayanidhi allegedly made a double entendre targeting the chief minister.
The remark drew widespread criticism, following which the TVK lodged a formal complaint. Based on the complaint, the Thanjavur police registered an FIR against Udhayanidhi under Sections 196 (promoting hatred between different groups), 192 (wantonly provoking with intent to cause a riot), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace), 79 (act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 296(b), 61 and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.
