'Powerful' sitcom finally gets release date as fans say 'cancel all plans'
Comedy fans have "cancelled all their plans" after the release date for a "hilarious" ITV sitcom was finally confirmed.
The Liverpool-set series, titled G'wed, follows the lives of a group of teenagers, delving into the working-class culture of 'surviving with a sense of humour'. Capturing the distinctive voice of Liverpool and the lived experience of youngsters from the city, the show tackles issues including grief, sex, diversity and class differences.
"Recently orphaned middle-class teenager Christopher goes to live with his grandmother on a Liverpool council estate and forms an unlikely alliance with working-class Reece," the synopsis reads.
"About to be expelled, Reece convinces his school's headmaster to give him one last chance and let him mentor Christopher."
The series, which first burst onto screens over two years ago, is set to make its eagerly awaited comeback on June 8th, with fans declaring they "can't wait", reports Liverpool Echo.
The release date announcement was accompanied by an amusing video featuring the cast squabbling over who should be the one to break the news.
The clip concluded with the actors walking off screen, the launch date emblazoned across the back of their t-shirts.
A trailer has also been released, offering fans a tantalising glimpse of what lies ahead, including a first look at newcomer Jennifer Ellison, who joins the cast as Aimee's (Amber Harrison) mother Anna, as she "turns her world upside down".
The broadcaster has further teased that the new episodes will be "funnier and bolder than ever", spotlighting "powerful and thought-provoking themes from the refugee crisis to women in sport and one of the series' returning characters managing life with OCD".
Back on our screens are Dylan Thomas-Smith as Reece, Jake Kenny-Byrne as Christopher, Max Ainsworth as Connor, Dominic Murphy as Ted, Zak Douglas as Mo, Gemma Barraclough as Mia-Louise and Evie Ward-Drummond as The Brimble.
ITV's head of comedy Nana Hughes spoke of her delight at the show's comeback, saying: "It is great to see that G'wed has resonated with our audiences across ITVX, ITV1 and ITV2!
"(Creator) Danny Kenny's writing had us crying with laughter one second, crying real tears the next and then back to laughter."
Viewers wasted no time making their feelings known on social media, with one simply declaring: "FINALLY". Another enthused: "Clever teasing. Awesome and hilarious comedy series", while a third wrote: "im obsessed with this announcement."
One devoted fan insisted: "That's me cancelling all my plans June 8th." Another chimed in: "FINALLY GET IN and tbf amber is not wrong she is." Meanwhile, one thrilled viewer added: "Finally woooo. I can't wait."
G'wed is set to return to ITV2 on Monday, June 8.
