Residents block road against renaming village
Trichy: Hundreds of villagers from F Keelaiyur in Trichy district held a road blockade near Manapparai on Wednesday opposing the renaming of their village to Ariyagoundampatti . They said the name change is creating much trouble for them because they have to update various official documents.
The protesters numbering around 200, including school students, said they recently discovered that govt records had altered their village’s name to Ariyagoundampatti. Their village had been known as F Keelaiyur for the past 50 years. Important documents such as school certificates, Aadhaar cards , land pattas, house tax receipts, and other records still bear the original name, they said.
The name change was creating much difficulties for students seeking admission to schools and colleges, applying for passports, and updating land records. They further alleged that the decision had been made without consultation with the local community.
The villagers blocked the Manapparai-Kovilpatti Road close to F Keelaiyur and held a sit-in. Officials from the revenue and rural development departments talked to the protesters. Residents tried to surrender their ration and Aadhaar cards in large numbers, but officials refused to accept them. After prolonged discussions, the authorities promised to take steps to restore the original name F Keelaiyur in a month. Subsequently, the villagers dispersed peacefully, but the protest caused traffic disruption on the Manapparai-Kovilpatti road for nearly two hours.
