Sky News interrupted for emotional Princess Kate announcement
Sky News Australia briefly paused their coverage to address Princess Kate. The royal "stole the show" while joining King Charles and Queen Camilla to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Cancer Research UK on June 2. In their first joint event championing a cancer-related cause, the Princess of Wales and the King attended a reception at St. James's Palace in London. At Tuesday evening's event, the royals met researchers, clinicians, volunteers and others involved in Cancer Research UK's prevention, diagnosis and treatment plans. The Princess of Wales stunned in a red dress with white hearts.
At the event, she spoke with Sebastian Bowen, husband of Deborah James, a journalist who became known as "BowelBabe" who spoke openly about her incurable bowel cancer, and was given a damehood during a personal home visit by Prince William before she died in 2022.
Host Gabriella Power discussed the royal's recent public appearance as her colleague delievered a heartfelt update. "She typically tries not to draw focus from the King and Queen, because of course they're the senior royals, but in this instance, Cancer is her big charity," News Corp columnist Angela Mollard told Sky News Australia.
Angela continued, "So she opened up and spoke to the TV host Davina McCall, who herself has been dealing with a brain tumour, and said that speaking out about having cancer and sharing her story with the public ... she found it liberating.
"And the TV host [Davina McCall] came back and said she was nervous as someone in the public eye to do that herself. But for her too, it had been something that was uplifting because of course it led to more people getting checked."
Kate underwent six months of chemotherapy, and in January 2025, she announced that she was in remission. The princess has since resumed full-time royal duties, and last month undertook her first overseas trip since her diagnosis.
The King was diagnosed with cancer at a similar time and continues to receive treatment for the disease.
Davina was diagnosed with breast cancer in October last year but said in April she had now received the "all clear" following surgery.
The broadcaster, who also underwent surgery in 2024 to remove a benign brain tumour, told Kate it was an "absolute honour" to meet her.
The two discussed Davina's cancer experience, as the TV presenter told the princess it had been "liberating" to talk about it publicly.
"This is what I love about the Princess of Wales in her forties," Angela continued.
The correspondent suggested Kate's striking appearance in a Rodarte red dress with white hearts print, signalled star power and her openess would also help drive further funding into cancer research.
"She turned up in a bright red dress with little love hearts on ... very much signalling look, she wanted people to look at her."
Meanwhile, Princess Kate travelled to Manchester on Thursday where she paid a visit to the Christie NHS Foundation Trust to highlight the healing power of holistic care, alongside clinical care, for people living with and beyond cancer. While in the hospital, Kate met 30-year-old Claire Lorente, who was marking the last day of her treatment after a battle with breast cancer.
