Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls Heat Up as Nomination Phase Nears End
The race for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is entering a decisive phase, with nomination filing set to close today. According to the Election Commission of India, a total of 3,430 nominations have already been submitted across the state, and the final day is expected to bring a last-minute surge.
The numbers reveal an interesting snapshot of participation. Out of the total nominations, 2,731 have been filed by men, while women account for 698 entries. Notably, one nomination has come from a third-gender candidate in Villivakkam, marking a small yet meaningful step toward inclusive representation.
Karur has emerged as the most crowded battleground, with 84 candidates filing nominations. The high count is largely driven by the presence of key political figures, including former AIADMK Minister M. R. Vijayabhaskar, along with a strong showing of Independent candidates. This has turned the constituency into a closely watched hotspot.
At the other end of the spectrum, Madurai South has seen minimal activity, with just three nominations filed so far. The contrast highlights how electoral intensity varies sharply across different regions of the state.
The spotlight now shifts to several high-profile leaders expected to file their papers today. Among them is AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, along with senior leaders like K. P. Munusamy, S. P. Velumani, and Dindigul C. Srinivasan.
From the BJP camp, key figures such as Nainar Nagenthran, L. Murugan, Tamilisai Soundararajan, and Vanathi Srinivasan are also set to join the fray.
With the nomination window closing, the process will soon move to scrutiny and possible withdrawals. Once that stage wraps up, Tamil Nadu will be all set for a high-stakes electoral contest that promises intense competition and political drama in the days ahead.
