A £4.99 bottle of wine from Aldi has been recognised by some of the world's top wine experts, the supermarket has announced. Aldi's Specially Selected Chilean Viognier (75cl) picked up a bronze award at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC).

The supermarket said the judges "praised the apricot and honeysuckle aromas with bright tangerine peel". "On the palate, tastes of papaya and ginger offer richness with a soft, lingering finish," it added.

The £4.99 wine is among several from Aldi to have recently won awards at both the IWSC and the International Wine Challenge (IWC).

Aldi picked up more than 50 prizes across its sparkling, white and red wine ranges, described by the supermarket chain as "medal-winning bottles available at everyday prices".

Sam Caporn, Aldi wine expert and mistress of wine, said: "These competitions are judged completely blind, with wines assessed on quality alone rather than brand or price.

"That's what makes Aldi's results so impressive, with several being awarded Silver medals even when tasted alongside more expensive bottles.

"With award-winning bottles available from just £4.99, shoppers can enjoy wines recognised by leading judges without paying premium prices."

Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, said: "We've always believed that exceptional wine shouldn't come with an exceptional price tag, and these results prove it."

She added: "More than 50 awards across our wine ranges shows customers they can trust Aldi for outstanding quality and value, every time."

Other Aldi wines to have been recognised at the competition include the £5.99 Specially Selected Chilean Pinot Noir Reserva and the £6.99 Specially Selected Chilean Merlot Reserva which both received the IWSC Silver award.

While for those who like a glass of fizz, Aldi's £15.99 Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut was awarded with the IWC Silver gong.

The range of award-winning wines are available in Aldi stores across the UK, the supermarket said.
