Trekking spots and waterfalls to reopen for tourists from June 1

Newspoint

Belthangady: Trekking destinations and waterfalls in Belthangady taluk will be reopened for tourists from June 1.

The Forest Department’s wildlife division had imposed restrictions on tourist entry to places including Netravathi Peak, Bandaje Falls and Gadayikallu from January this year.

The restrictions were introduced to prevent fire incidents and forest fires during summer and also in view of the tiger census activities. Kadamgundi and Bollé waterfalls have already been reopened for public viewing. There were no restrictions on visiting Ermai Falls, which is located on private property.

With rainfall bringing moderate water flow to the region, the threat of fire incidents and forest fires has reduced, following which authorities have decided to allow tourists again. As the monsoon season approaches, waterfalls in the region are expected to become more attractive with increased water flow.

Gadayikallu also reopened

Entry to Gadayikallu, a major trekking destination located in Nada-Laila village, will also be allowed from June 1. Entry to the spot had been banned in February due to fire risks and tiger census operations.

Located at an altitude of around 1,700 feet above sea level, Gadayikallu is a popular destination among trekkers. Authorities said entry may again be restricted during periods of heavy rainfall as rocks in the area become slippery.

Guidelines for tourists

Authorities have instructed tourists and trekkers to maintain cleanliness and protect the environment. Strict action will be taken against those involved in any unwanted activities.

Visitors will be allowed entry only during the timings fixed by the department, from morning till evening. Night stay will not be permitted. Tourists have also been directed to follow all departmental rules and enter only authorised areas.

Visitors must carry valid identity proof.

The wildlife division said online registration through the Aranya Vihara website is mandatory for visits to Netravathi Peak and Bandaje Falls. Offline registration facilities are available for Gadayikallu and Kadamgundi waterfall areas.
