UK's best supermarket sausages from Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons and more - top 3
Sausages are a quintessential staple of British cuisine. Whether it's toad in the hole or a classic sausage sandwich, they make for a mouth-watering addition to any meal.
If you're keen to discover which ones truly stand out from the rest, read on. Consumer group Which? conducted a blind taste test featuring 10 supermarket own-label sausages alongside The Jolly Hog and Porky Whites. A panel of 60 participants rated each sausage on flavour, texture and aroma in a bid to crown the ultimate banger.
Three "brilliant" sausages clinched the consumer group's coveted Best Buy award - and the best part is, they're all own-brand.
Lidl, Aldi and Morrisons all walked away with the top accolade. Lidl Deluxe Pork Sausages (£2.49 for 400g) achieved an impressive 73% rating for "eating pleasure", moistness, texture and value for money.
This narrowly beat the 72% achieved by Aldi Specially Selected Pork Sausages, hailed as "impressive all-rounders". A 400g pack is also priced at £2.49.
Morrisons' The Best Thick Pork Sausages equally scored 72%, retailing at £3.25 for 400g. Which? noted that the majority of tasters were "happy" with the appearance, aroma and flavour of these bangers.
Asda secured fourth place, with testers noting the meaty flavour and seasoning struck just the right balance. Two thirds of participants also approved of the texture.
Priced at £3.17 for 400g (79p per 100g), they come in at a slightly higher price point.
The Co-Op sausages also performed well, priced at £3.90 for 400g (98p per 100g). While tasters appreciated the taste and texture, some felt they could benefit from a touch more flavour.
As for The Jolly Hog and Porky Whites, both brands failed to reach the top spot. The Jolly Pork looked and smelled appetising - however, the flavour proved too subtle and the texture was deemed "too coarse". Overall, the brand achieved a score of 65%.
Porky Whites also landed at 65%, with fewer than half of the tasters satisfied with the texture. While visually appealing, they were ultimately found to be lacking in flavour.
