Woman Librarian in Karnataka Commits Suicide Allegedly Over Unpaid Salary; BJP Points Finger at Congress
Karnataka Librarian’s Death Over Unpaid Salary Triggers Political Storm
A heartbreaking incident from Kalaburagi district, Karnataka, has sparked widespread anger after Bhagyavati V. Aggimath, a 40-year-old librarian, allegedly died by suicide due to severe financial distress caused by three months of unpaid salary.
Bhagyavati had been working at the state-run Arivu Centre library in Mulakheda village for six years. In her suicide note, she stated that mounting financial pressure and unpaid dues had left her unable to manage household expenses or pay her children’s school fees.
Her family has accused the concerned department of gross negligence, claiming repeated pleas for payment went unanswered. They have demanded adequate compensation and a government job for one family member to support her children.
Police have registered a case and begun an investigation into the matter.
BJP Terms It a “Shame for Civil Society”
Condemning the incident, BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra said
“The death of librarian Bhagyavati Vishweshwarayya Aggimath of Sedam taluk in Kalaburagi district, who ended her life after falling into severe distress without receiving her salary, has exposed the bankruptcy and heartless system of the Congress government in Karnataka. The tragic end of Bhagyavati Aggimath is a matter of shame for civil society.”
He further stated,
“The merciless state government has reached a point where it cannot even pay its employees, causing hardship to workers who depend solely on their salaries for survival. This attitude of the government is highly condemnable. The bereaved family must at once receive proper compensation and employment support for one member.”
Vijayendra also criticized the state leadership, alleging that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister Priyank Kharge have remained “indifferent to the problems of the people” and are “focused only on the politics of power.”
Administrative Negligence Under Scrutiny
The tragedy has brought to light the plight of contractual and low-paid government staff, many of whom face delays in salaries and limited financial security. Opposition leaders are now calling for an audit of payment practices in public institutions.
Local residents and activists have also demanded that the government ensure timely disbursement of salaries to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As investigations continue, Bhagyavati’s death stands as a grim reminder of the human cost of administrative apathy.
