Women across West Bengal are set to receive a major benefit from June 1, 2026. In a fresh move aimed at boosting women’s empowerment and financial independence, the state government has announced free travel for women on all government buses across the state.
The initiative is expected to ease daily travel expenses for lakhs of women while also making public transport more accessible and convenient.
Women to Travel Free on Government Buses
According to the Transport Department, every woman residing in West Bengal will be eligible to travel free of cost on government-operated buses. The scheme will cover all categories of state-run buses, giving women relief from regular commuting expenses.
The government believes this step will encourage safer and more affordable mobility for women, especially students, working professionals, and daily commuters.
QR-Code Smart Cards to Be Introduced
To make the travel process smooth and secure, the government will issue special smart cards to women beneficiaries. These cards will come with a QR code along with the holder’s photograph and personal details.
The smart card system is being introduced to simplify verification and ensure hassle-free travel across the state transport network.
How to Apply for the Smart Card
Women who wish to avail the facility will need to apply through their local administrative offices. Applications can be submitted at:
Free Travel Even Before Card Issuance
The government has also made temporary arrangements until the smart cards are distributed. Women can continue to travel free by simply showing a valid government-issued photo identity card while boarding buses.
This ensures that beneficiaries do not have to wait for the physical card rollout to start using the scheme.
