are expected to be part of the Indian setup after recovering from their fitness issues, and aside from team combination and player selection one major concern is ensuring that there is clarity in the ODI dressing room.

It has been a tough initiation for Shubman Gill as the full-time Indian ODI captain ever since taking charge in October last year India lost ODI series against Australia away from home and against New Zealand at home and were only victorious in an ODI series in South Africa when Gill was ruled out due to a neck injury.

Gautam Gambhir and Gill Need Clear ODI Direction

Gautam Gambhir has made an immediate impact as Head Coach in T20I and Test cricket India won the T20 World Cup under him and the Test side is building a new identity after the departure of several senior players. The ODI team, though is a different story. While T20I and Test cricket involve a mix of seniors and youth India's ODI squad has Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya in its fold and balancing senior and developing players simultaneously poses a significant challenge.

While some senior Indian players are reportedly in touch with relevant BCCI officials to get a grasp of India's plans up to 2027 ODI World Cup Kohli who will turn 38 this November and is currently suffering from a hamstring niggle which will rule him out from the Afghanistan series remains one of India's best ODI batsmen in recent times enjoying a brilliant run of form in the ODIs against South Africa that began in November. At 39 Rohit Sharma also remains hungry to win that one step further after a Runners-up finish in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Big Decisions Await Ahead of 2027 World Cup

Even with the presence of stalwarts like Rohit and Kohli still providing invaluable contribution, India has to look to the future and beyond. Gill's own performance as ODI captain has drawn a lot of flak since being named captain for the ODIs, averaging a poor 27 in six matches as skipper and there are suggestions that there needs to be more command and control in the ODI dressing room.

BCCI source said :

"With big names like these in the team Gill has to have more of a say in the dressing room. Gambhir has not yet been involved as intently with the planning as he has been in the other two formats; so far he has let things roll along. Now that the focus is shifting towards preparation for the ODI World Cup we might see Gambhir and Gill finally take more of a charge and communicate what they envision firmly to the dressing room. The senior players who have all served the country with distinction for so many years need to be informed of their role in the scheme of things and what the buildup towards 2027 involves."

Gill has had a success start to his captaincy campaign in the Test format leading a young Indian side through a transitional phase. Now, he and Gambhir have the challenge of managing seasoned veterans and the newer breed to build India's ODI team for 2027. The upcoming series against Afghanistan can serve as the first step in laying the groundwork for the Indian plan towards the 2027 ODI World Cup
