How much do you know about the NTA, the body that conducts JEE, NEET, and CUET?
What is the NTA? When was it established? Which exams does it conduct, and who heads it? Get the full details about the National Testing Agency—the body responsible for organizing JEE, NEET, and CUET.
Every year in India, millions of students dream of becoming doctors or engineers, or of studying at the country’s top universities. The path to turning these dreams into reality runs through exams like JEE, NEET, and CUET. The responsibility for conducting all these major exams lies with a single organization: the National Testing Agency (NTA). In recent years, the NTA has been in the spotlight for various reasons. Given this, it is important to understand what this organization is and what role it plays in the country’s education system.
What is the NTA, and how did it begin?
The National Testing Agency (NTA) was established by the Central Government in 2017. Its objective was to conduct the country’s major entrance exams under a professional and transparent system. Previously, different organizations conducted different exams, leading to a lack of uniformity in the examination system. Consequently, the decision was made to create an agency dedicated solely to the conduct of examinations.
Which exams does the NTA conduct?
Today, the NTA conducts several important entrance and eligibility exams in the country. The most prominent among them are:
JEE Main
NEET UG
CUET UG
CUET PG
UGC NET
CMAT
GPAT
It has responsibilities beyond just conducting exams
People often assume that the NTA’s job is merely to conduct exams, but its responsibilities extend far beyond that. Selecting exam centers, managing technical infrastructure, ensuring the security of question papers, overseeing the examination process, and releasing results are all part of the organization’s mandate. Additionally, the NTA continuously works on new technologies to improve the examination system.
Who leads the NTA? Currently, Pradeep Kumar Joshi serves as the Chairperson of the NTA. He is a former Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and possesses extensive experience in the fields of education and examination administration. Meanwhile, Abhishek Singh, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, serves as the Director General of the NTA; he is responsible for the agency’s day-to-day operations and administrative decisions.
A Unique Blend of Academics and Administration
A distinctive feature of the NTA is the collaborative working relationship between education sector experts and administrative officials. While the organization’s governing body comprises academicians, the administrative machinery is managed by senior officials. This structure is why the NTA is viewed as a balanced model of education and administration.
A History of Controversies
The NTA became the subject of a national debate following controversies surrounding the NEET and UGC-NET exams in 2024. Numerous questions were raised regarding the transparency and security of the examinations. Subsequently, several measures were taken to strengthen the examination system. Despite these challenges, the NTA remains one of the country’s most important examination agencies.
