JoSAA Counselling 2026: Which Documents Are Required for Admission to IITs? Understand the Ins and Outs of JoSAA Counselling..
JoSAA Counselling 2026 Process: With the declaration of the JEE Advanced 2026 results, the first milestone has been completed for qualified candidates across the country. Out of the more than 1.79 lakh candidates who appeared for the examination, 56,880 have qualified. These candidates will now receive their ticket for admission into the IITs. However, it is important to note that merely passing the examination is not sufficient. The actual path to securing a coveted seat at an IIT leads through the 'JoSAA'—the Joint Seat Allocation Authority—counselling process.
Following the JEE Advanced 2026 results, a common question on everyone's mind is: When will the counselling process begin? How does one participate in it? And how does one lock in their preferred IIT campus and desired branch (such as Computer Science or Data Science)? JoSAA Counselling 2026 is a centralized online process that offers admission opportunities to 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and other Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) across the country. Read on to understand the complete process for JoSAA Counselling 2026.
JoSAA Counselling Eligibility Criteria
Two categories of candidates are eligible to participate in JoSAA counselling:
Candidates who have qualified in JEE Main 2026 will be eligible for seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
The 56,880 candidates who have cleared the cutoff for the recently released JEE Advanced 2026 results will be eligible to stake their claim for seats across all 23 IIT institutions in the country via the JoSAA portal.
Online Registration and Choice Filling
As soon as the JoSAA portal goes live, candidates must log in using their JEE Main or JEE Advanced credentials. This marks the beginning of the most critical step: Choice Filling. In this stage, candidates are required to fill out a list of colleges and branches—ranked in order of preference—based on their respective ranks. Candidates are free to select as many options as they wish. Therefore, always prioritize your preferred colleges by placing them at the top of your list, and do not forget to ‘lock’ your choices once you have filled them out.
**3 Essential Rules for Seat Allotment: Freeze, Float, and Slide**
During JoSAA counseling, when a seat is allotted to a candidate, JoSAA offers three options:
**Freeze:** If you are completely satisfied with the allotted seat and college and do not wish to participate in subsequent rounds, select this option to confirm and secure your seat.
**Float:** This implies that while you retain the allotted seat, you are keeping the option open to upgrade to a better college or branch in the subsequent rounds.
**Slide:** If you have secured your preferred college but wish to upgrade to a better or different preferred branch *within that same college*, select the ‘Slide’ option.
**Documents Required for IIT Admission: Essential Documents for JoSAA Counseling**
Once a seat has been allotted, students are required to undergo online document verification. For this process, you must possess the following documents:
JoSAA Allotment Letter
JEE Advanced/Mains Admit Card and Scorecard
Class 10th and 12th Mark Sheets and Passing Certificates (for age and board verification)
Category Certificate (if applicable—OBC-NCL, GEN-EWS, SC, ST)—issued in the prescribed format
Medical Certificate (certified by a doctor as per the official JoSAA format)
**When and How to Secure Admission to an IIT?**
JoSAA counseling is typically conducted over 5–6 rounds. As soon as you secure your desired seat (by the final round) and your documents have been verified online, you are required to pay the ‘Seat Acceptance Fee.’ Once the JoSAA process is complete, the respective IITs will publish the schedule for physical reporting on their official websites. Generally, by the last week of July or the first week of August 2026, you will be required to visit your allotted IIT campus to complete the offline verification process and pay the requisite fees.
