Major Change by UPSC: Prelims Answer Key Released Before Results for the First Time

Newspoint

UPSC has released the provisional answer key for the CSE Prelims 2026. Candidates can now assess their preparation level by cross-referencing with the official answer key.

A significant change has been observed this time regarding the UPSC Civil Services Examination—widely considered one of the toughest competitive exams in the country. Putting an end to the long wait of lakhs of candidates, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has, for the very first time, released the answer key for the CSE Prelims 2026 before the declaration of the results. This decision has sparked fresh discussions among students preparing for the examination.

More than 800,000 candidates appeared for the UPSC Prelims examination held across the country on May 24. Students arrived at examination centers harboring dreams of joining prestigious services such as the IAS, IPS, and IFS. As is customary, immediately after the exam concluded, unofficial answer keys from various coaching institutes began circulating on social media; however, UPSC has now provided immense relief to candidates by officially releasing its own answer key.

UPSC Alters Its Procedure for the First Time

Until now, it had been UPSC’s long-standing tradition to release the final answer key only after the entire examination process—including both the Prelims and Mains—had been completed. Consequently, candidates often had to wait for months to verify which of their answers were correct and which were incorrect. However, making a major procedural shift this time, the Commission has released a provisional answer key immediately following the Prelims examination.

This move is being hailed as one of the most significant procedural reforms undertaken by UPSC. It will enable candidates to accurately gauge their performance without any delay and commence their preparation for the Main Examination (Mains) much sooner.

Candidates Can Now Register Objections

Beyond merely releasing the answer key, UPSC has also provided candidates with an opportunity to register objections. To facilitate this, the Commission has launched a dedicated “Question Paper Representation Portal.” If a candidate believes that the provided answer to any specific question is incorrect, they may register an objection against it. Furthermore, candidates are required to submit necessary evidence and supporting information to substantiate their claims.
