Identity and civil status documents

Applicants must provide proof of identity, usually in the form of a valid passport. If a passport cannot be submitted, other identity documents such as a national identity card, driving licence or a travel document for stateless persons may be accepted.

Civil status documents are also required. Depending on an individual's situation, these may include a birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree or adoption order.

Proof of legal residence and accommodation

Applicants must show that they have the right to live in Germany. In most cases, this can be done by submitting an electronic residence permit (eAT) that confirms permanent or long-term residence status. Applicants must also provide proof of accommodation in Germany, such as a copy of their rental agreement.

Documents to prove five years of residence

German authorities require applicants to show they have lived in Germany for the required residence period. This can be demonstrated through various documents, including:
  • Pension insurance records
  • Payslips
  • University enrolment certificates
  • Training course certificates
  • School reports
  • Bank statements showing card transactions in Germany
  • Medical visit records

Proof of financial independence

Applicants must show that they can support themselves and any dependent family members without relying on public assistance. Documents that can be submitted include an employment contract, salary slips or income tax assessment notices.

German language requirement

Applicants must generally prove German language skills at the B1 level. This requirement can be met by submitting one of several recognised documents, including:
