When it comes to dragon fruit production , Vietnam proudly stands as the largest dragon fruit producer in the world. The country produces more than one million metric tonnes each year, dominating the global dragon fruit market and supplying a significant share of worldwide exports.

Over 95% of Vietnam dragon fruit cultivation is concentrated in the Binh Thuan region, where favourable climate conditions support year-round farming. Although the peak harvest season runs from May to August, farmers use artificial lighting techniques to stimulate off-season flowering. This innovation ensures a steady supply of dragon fruit exports throughout the year, strengthening Vietnam’s global presence.

Vietnamese dragon fruit is known for its smooth texture, refreshing water content and balanced sweetness. The fruit is widely exported to China, the United States, the European Union and several Asian countries, making it one of Vietnam’s most valuable agricultural products.

Other Top Dragon Fruit Producing Countries

While Vietnam leads, several other nations contribute significantly to dragon fruit production:
  • China has expanded domestic cultivation, particularly in Guangxi and Hainan provinces. Although it remains a major importer, local production is steadily increasing.
  • Indonesia produces around 270,000 metric tonnes annually, mainly in East Java and Bali, where volcanic soil enhances yield quality.
  • Thailand grows approximately 160,000 metric tonnes each year, with cultivation centred in Nakhon Ratchasima and Chiang Mai.
  • Taiwan also plays an important role, boasting impressive productivity levels per hectare.

Emerging producers such as Colombia, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Israel and India are investing in research and expanding exports to meet growing global demand.


Dragon Fruit Varieties and Interesting Facts

Vietnam mainly grows white-fleshed (Hylocereus undatus) and red-fleshed (Hylocereus costaricensis) varieties. The sweeter yellow-skinned type (Selenicereus megalanthus) is also gaining popularity in export markets.

Interestingly, dragon fruit grows on a climbing cactus plant rather than a tree. Its large flowers bloom for just one night, earning the nickname “moonflower”. The tiny black seeds inside are edible and add a pleasant crunch, similar to kiwi seeds.

Thanks to rising health awareness and its vibrant appearance, dragon fruit has become a global superfood trend and Vietnam continues to lead the way.
