Arun Govil Responds to Dipika Chikhlia’s ‘Out of Context’ Comment on His Ramayana Role

Veteran actor Arun Govil, best known for portraying Lord Ram in the classic television series Ramayan, has responded to remarks made by his former co-star Dipika Chikhlia regarding his casting in a new Ramayana project. Govil is set to play King Dashrath in the highly anticipated film directed by Nitesh Tiwari. However, due to his enduring association with the role of Ram, the casting decision has received mixed reactions.

Dipika Chikhlia, who became a household name for her portrayal of Mata Sita in the original Ramayan series, had earlier said in an interview that she finds it difficult to imagine Govil in any role other than Lord Ram. She added that seeing him as Dashrath “feels a little out of context” to her.

Responding to her comments during a recent interaction with news agency IANS, Govil reacted with grace and respect. He described Chikhlia’s remarks as her personal perspective and emphasised that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. He added that differing viewpoints are a natural part of creative interpretation and do not affect his enthusiasm or commitment to the role.

Govil also spoke about working with Ranbir Kapoor on Ramayana. He praised Kapoor as an “exceptional actor” and said he has witnessed the younger star’s dedication and positive demeanour firsthand. Govil wished him well, highlighting a sense of professional camaraderie and mutual respect throughout the film’s production process.

The highly anticipated Ramayana features a star-studded ensemble, with Ranbir Kapoor portraying Lord Ram and Sai Pallavi as Mata Sita. The film also casts Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Ravi Dubey as Lakshman. The project is backed by Prime Focus Studios and Monster Mind Creations, supported by a strong technical team that includes notable talent across music and visual effects.

Govil’s measured response to Chikhlia’s comment reflects a broader recognition of how deeply certain portrayals from the past are cherished by audiences and peers alike. Many fans grew up associating Govil with the role of Ram, making his transition to a different character emotionally resonant and, for some viewers, surprising. However, his professional stance underscores a belief in artistic exploration and the evolution that comes with new creative ventures.

As Ramayana continues to generate anticipation ahead of its release, reactions to casting and legacy interpretations are likely to remain topics of spirited conversation. Govil’s remarks highlight that personal attachment to iconic roles can shape individual reactions, but they do not deter actors from pursuing diverse opportunities that contribute to enduring cultural narratives.
