1. Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

Often considered the king of modern rom-com anime , Kaguya-sama: Love Is War turns romance into an all-out mental and psychological warfare. The story follows two elite student council members who are just too prideful to confess to each other that they are secretly in love with each other.

What makes the anime stand out from others is its overdramatic narration combined with brilliant comedic timing and mind-game-style storytelling. Every episode feels like a chess game where even sending a text message seems like a major operation.

The show balances absurd humour with genuine romantic progression better than almost any anime in the genre.

2. Toradora!

Toradora! is a classic that still influences modern romance anime today. The story revolves around Ryuuji Takasu, who is a kind-hearted boy with a slightly intimidating face, and Taiga Aisaka, a tiny but extremely aggressive girl nicknamed the ‘Palmtop Tiger'.

Initially, the two help each other pursue their respective crushes, but things slowly become emotionally complicated. The anime shines because of its realistic emotional writing and strong character growth.

3. Ranma 1/2

With the remake still available to watch on Netflix, it's easy to forget just how good the original Ranma 1/2 anime truly is. The romantic comedy classic still feels fresh thanks to its unique blend of martial arts comedy and Ranma's special curse. Since he can transform into a boy or a girl by getting splashed with water, the series goes out of its way to make these transitions happen in creative ways. Ranma could be knocked into a swimming pool by his love interest, Akane, turning him into a girl. Conversely, a casual shower can revert her into a boy and lead to awkward situations as Akane accidentally walks in on him.

Despite Ranma 1/2 focusing on its comedy, the action is still just as good. Ranma's battles with his rival Ryoga are some of the most entertaining fights in the whole show. Akane also gets to fight her own rivals, like the Chinese Amazon, Shampoo. As both Akane and Ranma deal with these rivals for their affection, their bond slowly starts to develop. At the start of the series, both fighters couldn't stand each other, even if they were forced together by their parents. It's only after encountering strong opponents, attending school together, and getting to know each other on a personal level do the duo start to truly love one another. Ranma 1/2 may be rather long, but every episode is filled with plenty of fun gags, humor, and occasional romance to make its length feel worth it.

4. My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU

This anime takes a more philosophical approach to the rom-com genre and it is also known as Oregairu, The story centers on Hachiman Hikigaya, a cynical high school student forced to join the Service Club alongside Yukino Yukinoshita and Yui Yuigahama.

What begins as a sarcastic comedy gradually evolves into a deep exploration of relationships, loneliness, and emotional vulnerability. Hachiman’s brutally honest worldview creates some of the funniest dialogue in anime, while the romantic tension slowly builds over multiple seasons.

5. The Quintessential Quintuplets

The Quintessential Quintuplets is a series that is the best at getting viewers invested in its multiple love interests. The Nakano sisters are all being tutored under the academically gifted Futaro Uesugi. Each one of them gets enough focus and time to shine as they develop feelings for Futaro. As the series progresses, it becomes clear that Futaro will have to choose between one of the five sisters, causing plenty of drama.

Each Nakano sister has a distinct personality that sets them apart from each other. Ichika, the oldest sister, is a caring figure for her younger sisters and an aspiring actress; Nino is a confident chef who's protective of her family, while Miku is an introvert with a passion for reading books. Even Yotsuba and Itsuki's confident personas are dedicated to their passion for sports and food, respectively.
