5 Near-Perfect Bleach Moments That Save the Franchise
Even though Bleach is widely considered one of the big 3 shonen anime, it has always been an uneven anime franchise. The epic reached spectacular heights through a combination of stylish characterization, poignant battle sequences, and some of the coolest transformations in anime. Unfortunately, it also struggled with inconsistent pacing, endless filler, abandoned plot threads, and divisive story arcs. Here are five bleach moments that saved the franchise:
Few characters capture the chaotic energy of Bleach better than Hollow Ichigo, whose manifestation transformed every major fight into psychological horror. Appearing at the worst possible moments, Hollow Ichigo felt like the protagonist's evil side for much of the Soul Society arc. And yet, it was their personality difference that cemented Hollow Ichigo as a memorable character, and nothing makes it clearer than the latter's unhinged antics.
On the surface, Retsu Unohana seemed kind, tender, and gentle, the perfect matriarch to govern the Gotei 13's healing division. At the same time, fans observed glimpses of great power lurking behind her compassionate smile, with some villains actually choosing to avoid a fight with her. Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War confirmed the anime's best example of foreshadowing by revealing Unohana to be the first and original Kenpachi.
Bankai reveals are the most exciting in Bleach, few are more than Rukia Kuchiki, the series' first character and the original protagonist before Kubo changed his mind to Ichigo. Her Shikai, Sode no Shirayuki, granted her ice-based techniques while simultaneously serving as the most beautiful Zanpakuto in Soul Society. Viewers truly understood what that meant when Rukia went Bankai, freezing everything around her with Hakka no Togame.
The Espada paled in comparison before the Sternritter of the Thousand-Year Blood War, but Aizen's minions had their own skills that made them formidable combatants. And although Coyote Starrk, Baraggan Luisenbairn and Tier Harribel technically outranked Ulquiorra Cifer, his Segunda Etapa arguably made him the strongest Espada. Ichigo was completely outclassed and overwhelmed, with Ulquiorra even killing the hero.
Sosuke Aizen revealing himself as the mastermind behind Soul Society's chaos is easily one of the most upsetting betrayals in anime. Until that point, Bleach fans genuinely believed that Aizen was a sweet, kindly man without a drop of evil in his veins. As it turned out, the exact opposite was true. Everything that everyone had known about Aizen was the product of Perfect Hypnosis, the ability of his Zanpakuto Kyoka Suigetsu.
