Kumar Sanu Recalls Singing at Underworld Don's Dubai Party, Says He Feared for His Life
Singer Kumar Sanu has recalled being made to sing at an underworld don's party in Dubai, saying he was frightened for his life and felt he had no choice but to perform. He also said the people who had called him to sing became his fans later.
Speaking on Subhojit Ghosh's podcast, the 68-year-old said the underworld had direct control over the Hindi film industry at the time. According to Sanu, the atmosphere in the industry was unsettling and violent incidents were taking place around people from the film world.
Acknowledging the frightening period, Kumar Sanu said, "A lot of things happened in front of my eyes, so I was scared. But I tried to reason with them. In return, they would ask for something like 'Come and sing here.' I went and sang. I had to do that. Afterwards, when they became my fans," he said with a smile, "they would say, 'If someone does anything to you, tell us; we'll take care of it.' I would say, 'There is no need for you to look after me; I can take care of myself.'"
Apart from reflecting on his past, Kumar Sanu has also been in the news over his legal battle concerning his personality and publicity rights. Last year, the singer approached the Delhi High Court, seeking protection over the commercial use of his name, voice, and distinctive singing style.
Apart from his professional life, Sanu has also been in the news for his personal life. In an interview, Sanu's ex-wife, Rita Bhattacharya, accused him of denying her food, medical care, and other essentials during her third pregnancy, leaving her to struggle with their two young sons amid divorce proceedings. Sanu later issued her a legal notice.
