A viral piece of fake news on social media falsely claimed that Aadhaar cards would become invalid after June 14 if they were issued over a decade ago and never updated. The Unique Identification Authority of India ( UIDAI ) has dismissed these claims, confirming that the news is untrue.
UIDAI emphasised that Aadhaar cards will continue to be valid even if they haven't been updated in the past ten years. The misleading reports stemmed from a previous announcement about the extension of the deadline for free updates of Aadhaar details. Initially set for March 14, the deadline was extended to June 14, 2024, leading to rumors that cards would become invalid after this date.
The extended deadline allows individuals to update their Aadhaar details online for free. However, updates requiring visits to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, such as adding a phone number, will incur a fee.

- Visit the UIDAI self-service update portal: UIDAI SSUP
- Click on ‘Login’ and enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number along with the captcha code.
- Click on ‘Send OTP’ to receive an OTP on the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.
- Under the Services tab, select ‘Update Aadhaar Online’.
- Click ‘Proceed to Update Aadhaar’ and choose the details you wish to update.
- Your existing Aadhaar details will be displayed.
- Make the necessary changes by uploading the required documents.
- Confirm the changes, and your information will be updated.
