Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices in Delhi-NCR have increased once again, adding further pressure on households, cab drivers, and transport operators already struggling with rising fuel expenses. On Tuesday, CNG prices were raised by Rs 2 per kg, taking the retail price in Delhi to Rs 83.09 per kg.

The latest CNG price hike comes at a time when petrol and diesel prices are also witnessing repeated increases across the country due to elevated global crude oil prices and disruptions in international energy supply chains.

Third Round of CNG Price Hike Since Mid-May

This is not the first increase in CNG prices this month. Fuel retailers had already revised rates multiple times in May before Tuesday’s latest hike.

On May 15, CNG prices were increased by Rs 2 per kg. Another Re 1 per kg hike followed on May 17, while fuel companies again raised prices by Re 1 per kg on May 23.

After the latest revision, the total increase in CNG prices since mid-May has gone up significantly, reflecting the mounting pressure on oil marketing companies due to volatile global energy markets.

Before Tuesday’s increase, CNG in Delhi was priced at Rs 81.09 per kg following the May 23 revision from Rs 80.09 per kg.

Why Are CNG Prices Rising?

The sharp increase in CNG prices is closely linked to rising global crude oil prices, disruptions in international shipping routes, and the weakening Indian Rupee.

According to PTI reports, global crude oil prices surged following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran and ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.

Higher import costs have increased the financial burden on fuel retailers, forcing them to pass on some of the additional costs to consumers.

Petrol and Diesel Prices Also Continue to Rise

Alongside the CNG price hike, petrol and diesel prices in India have also seen repeated upward revisions over the last two weeks.

As per PTI, petrol prices were increased by Rs 2.61 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre on May 25. This marked the fourth fuel price increase within less than two weeks.

Reports stated that cumulative petrol and diesel price hikes since May 15 have reached nearly Rs 7.5 per litre.

Following the latest revision, petrol prices in Delhi rose to Rs 102.12 per litre from Rs 99.51, while diesel prices climbed to Rs 95.20 per litre from Rs 92.49.

Earlier, on May 23, petrol prices had already been increased by 87 paise per litre and diesel by up to 91 paise per litre.

Oil Companies Facing Financial Pressure

State-run oil marketing companies including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited together control nearly 90 percent of India’s fuel retail market.

According to PTI, these companies continue to face heavy under-recoveries despite repeated fuel price hikes. Rising global crude prices and higher import costs have significantly increased operational pressure on oil firms.

PTI also cited Petroleum Ministry Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma, who reportedly said that state-run oil companies were still suffering substantial daily losses even after the latest revisions in petrol, diesel, and LPG prices.

Consumers Likely to Feel Inflation Pressure

Experts believe the continuous rise in fuel prices could further increase transportation and logistics costs across multiple sectors.

Higher CNG, petrol, and diesel prices may eventually impact the prices of essential goods, food delivery services, cab fares, and daily commuting expenses for consumers.

Analysts have also warned that if global energy prices remain elevated, inflationary pressure could continue to affect the broader economy in the coming weeks.
