According to IMD data, Safdarjung, which is the capital’s primary weather station, has recorded temperatures above normal levels, while areas such as Palam, Ridge, and Najafgarh have experienced even hotter conditions. Strong dry winds blowing from Rajasthan have further intensified the heatwave, adding to the discomfort.

Warm Nights Add to Residents’ Discomfort

Apart from the intense daytime heat, residents of the NCR are also struggling with unusually warm nights. Meteorologists have also recorded one of Delhi’s hottest May nights in recent years. With temperature remaining high even after sunset, people across Delhi-NCR are getting very little relief from the heat, increasing the risk of heat-related illness such as heatstroke.

The extreme weather has increased electricity consumption across the NCR significantly. People are heavily relying on air conditioners and coolers to combat the intense heat.

At the same time, air quality in parts of NCR has also worsened due to high levels of pollution and dust. The combination of heat and poor air quality is becoming a nightmare for the residents, causing widespread discomfort.

The extreme heat has also triggered complaints of power outages across Noida and Greater Noida in Gautam Budh Nagar, with many residents reporting repeated electricity disruptions, especially during nighttime.

IMD Predicts Rain and Thunderstorm Relief

Amid the relentless heat, there is some relief for Delhi- NCR residents. The IMD has predicted light rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusty winds, which are likely to reach the region in the coming days.

The weather department has stated that western disturbances and pre-monsoon activity are likely to become more active after May 28, due to which temperature may drop by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius.

Dust storms are also likely in isolated areas, especially during late evening hours. Experts warn that sudden thunderstorms could temporarily disrupt road traffic, flights, and metro connectivity in parts of the NCR if wind intensity increases further.
