Free Train Travel For Life: Indian Railways Scheme To Start From November 1, Know Who Qualifies
The government is expanding the lifetime free rail travel facility for decorated members of the Armed Forces and eligible family members. Recipients of the Sena Medal , Nao Sena Medal and Vayu Sena Medal for gallantry will now be covered under the benefit.
The facility is being rolled out through a digital and paperless system. Eligible beneficiaries will have to register online and complete an eligibility verification process before they can receive an electronic pass. Ticket bookings through IRCTC will begin from November 1, 2026.
The benefit also allows an accompanying companion to travel without paying the fare.
This includes spouses of Army, Navy and Air Force personnel who received the specified gallantry medals. Widows or widowers of fallen gallantry award recipients can also qualify, provided they have not remarried.
In the case of an unmarried military personnel who received a gallantry medal after death, their parents can also be covered under the facility.
Eligible beneficiaries will first need to register through the Indian Railway Concession Card Portal (IRCCP). Their eligibility will then be verified through the system.
Once the verification is completed, an electronic e-pass will be issued. Beneficiaries can use this pass while booking eligible train tickets through the IRCTC platform.
The ticket booking facility under the expanded benefit is scheduled to open on November 1, 2026.
