Heavy rains: 20 people bitten by snakes in a single night, three dead

Hathras: Continuous heavy rainfall and widespread waterlogging have led to a sharp rise in snakebite cases in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district, with health officials reporting around 20 snakebite incidents in a single night. Three people have died due to snakebites over the past five days.

According to medical experts, rainwater has flooded snake burrows, forcing the reptiles to move into residential areas and agricultural fields in search of shelter. Officials said this has led to an increase in human-snake encounters.

All snakebite victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, while those in critical condition were shifted to the district hospital for advanced treatment. Doctors said most patients have been administered anti-snake venom (ASV) and are now out of danger.

In view of the situation, the health department has urged people, especially those living in rural areas, to remain alert during the night. Residents have been advised to carry torches or flashlights while stepping outdoors, use mosquito nets while sleeping, and keep their homes and surroundings clean to reduce the risk of snake encounters.

Officials also advised people not to rely on traditional healers or superstitious practices after a snakebite and instead seek immediate medical treatment at the nearest hospital.

As a precautionary measure, authorities have directed all primary and community health centres in the district to maintain adequate stocks of anti-snake venom.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has forecast more heavy rainfall in several districts of Uttar Pradesh over the coming days, prompting authorities to remain on alert.
