The History of Delhi Gymkhana Club: A Legacy of Power, Prestige, and Colonial Heritage
The Delhi Gymkhana Club is one of the oldest Clubs in India. It moved to its present location on 3rd July 1913. It was then called the “Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club” and Mr. Spencer Harcourt Butler was its first President. When India gained Independence in 1947, the word “Imperial” was dropped and it was simply known as the “Delhi Gymkhana Club.”
The Gymkhana club or the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana club , had its humble origins in July 1913. In the initial years, the Polo Club was seen as a part of Gymkhana Club until it was achieved as a separate entity in the 1930s when the Polo Club moved to New Delhi. The history of the Delhi Gymkhana Club’s origin is not well documented, and it is only after 1927 that the club’s history starts getting recorded.
Origins During the British Era
The club was originally founded back in 1913, when it was initially founded as ‘Imperial Delhi Gymkhana club’ after the British shifted its capital from Calcutta to Delhi in 1911. The club was initially created for British civil servants, military officers, and members of the colonial elite who wanted a recreational and networking space in the newly developing imperial capital. It is located in the heart of New Delhi near India Gate in the Lutyens' Delhi zone, and the club became a centerpiece of British social life. The architecture of the building reflects colonial aesthetics and features sprawling lawns, wooden interiors, and sports facilities that mirrored elite clubs in England.
This was a time when Indians were largely excluded from membership in many colonial clubs.
Transformation After Independence
The club underwent a major transformation right after India gained independence from British rule. The word ‘Imperial’ was dropped, and it officially became the Delhi Gymkhana Club. Membership policies slowly changed, allowing prominent Indians from politics, bureaucracy, the armed forces, judiciary, and business communities to join. The club has become widely known for its influence in modern India, as senior IAS officers, ministers, diplomats, military officials, and industrialists have frequently used the club for networking and social gatherings.
Controversies and Legal Battles
The Delhi Gymkhana Club has recently caught the public eye as it is in the news for membership issues, transparency concerns and financial fraud. It has also come under close scrutiny from the Indian government regarding its administration and finances.Next Story
