Western Disturbance and Monsoon Activity Trigger Widespread Weather Changes

Strong winds could uproot large trees. A cyclonic circulation is developing over southern Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, northern Madhya Pradesh, northern Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and the Gangetic plains of West Bengal. Here we look at the weather conditions for today, June 12.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 30 degrees Celsius on Thursday, two degrees above the seasonal average. The maximum temperature was expected to touch around 41 degrees Celsius before the evening rain brought relief.

The weather activity is part of a broader system affecting large parts of the country. According to the IMD, an active western disturbance, the advancing Southwest Monsoon and multiple cyclonic circulations are triggering thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and strong winds across several states.

The Southwest Monsoon has advanced further into Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, as well as parts of West Bengal.

For Friday, the IMD has placed large parts of North India under an Orange Alert, warning of potentially severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms, heavy rain and gusty winds. Dust storms are also likely at isolated places in Rajasthan.

Multiple States Brace for Severe Weather

Across northwest India, thunderstorms, squally winds and isolated hailstorms are likely over parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Wind speeds could reach 60-80 kmph in some areas.

Heavy rainfall is expected over Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha, while Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to witness persistent rain that could continue over the coming days. Thunderstorms and strong winds are also forecast across parts of eastern India.

In the Northeast, widespread rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Very heavy rainfall is forecast over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, raising the risk of localised flooding and waterlogging.

Southern states will remain under an active monsoon pattern. Very heavy rainfall is likely over Coastal Karnataka, while heavy rain is forecast across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and parts of interior Karnataka.
