Indian Railways Master Plan: Travel From Varanasi’s 3 Stations To Every Corner Of India

The Indian Railways is taking a giant leap in transforming Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s hometown, into a world-class rail transport hub. The Railway Ministry has unveiled a master plan for the integrated development of the city’s three main stations- Kashi, Varanasi Cantt, and Varanasi Junction. This initiative aims to make train travel faster, more convenient, and passenger-friendly while boosting train capacity across the region.

Ambitious Expansion Plan


Currently, around 400 trains operate daily from these three stations. The Railways plans to raise this number to 500 trains daily, increasing capacity by roughly 25% and offering more travel options to passengers. With reduced congestion, travellers can expect smoother boarding and an overall enhanced journey experience.

High-Tech Passenger Amenities


During his inspection, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav emphasised passenger convenience as a priority. Planned upgrades include spacious waiting areas, escalators, elevators, food courts, advanced information systems, improved parking, and seamless multimodal integration. These measures aim to provide passengers with a world-class railway experience.

Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar also reviewed station redevelopment, platform expansions, and modern facilities at Varanasi Railway Station to ensure a top-tier experience for travellers.

Banaras Rail Engine Factory Inspection


The minister also visited the Banaras Rail Engine Factory (BARECA), a key facility manufacturing modern locomotives for Indian Railways. He examined the loco frame shop, assembly, and test shops, gaining insights into production processes. The factory not only supports domestic rail operations but also strengthens export potential.


Launch of Four New Vande Bharat Express Trains


On November 8, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off four new Vande Bharat Express trains from Varanasi, including the Banaras–Khajuraho, Lucknow–Saharanpur, Firozpur–Delhi, and Ernakulam–Bengaluru routes. These new services will reduce travel time between major cities, offering passengers a faster, safer, and more comfortable journey.

With these additions, the total number of Vande Bharat Express trains across India has reached 164, reflecting the Railways’ vision to make Varanasi a model railway city. The project not only benefits passengers but also strengthens trade, tourism, and pilgrimage connectivity, positioning Varanasi as a modern rail transport hub in India.
